Eugene “Gene” Edward Mollo Gonzales died peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 14, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Ventola Gonzales; his two children, Jeanne Gonzales Lund (Tom) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Stacey Gonzales Lundgren (Eric) of Carrollton, Texas, and three grandchildren, Amanda Jean Lund of Richmond, Virginia; Sydney Angelina Lundgren and Collin Lawrence Lundgren both of Carrollton, Texas; sister-in-law, Marie V. Malloy of Harahan; nephews, John Ventola (Molly) of Abita Springs and Chad Ventola (Olivia) of New Orleans; nieces, Courtney Ventola of Jefferson and Carly Ventola of Harahan. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Edward Mollo, Sr., and his mother, Marie Schmerda Mollo Gonzales. Mr. Gonzales was born March 27, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, and has been a resident of Harahan for 52 years. He attended Warren Easton High School, excelling in academics and starring in football for four years. He graduated from Louisiana State University in Electrical Engineering in 1950. He began his career with the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), now the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA); then moved to Avondale Shipyards where he served for thirty years as the assistant electrical superintendent and electrical superintendent. He retired from Avondale in 1991. Mr. Gonzales was a retired Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve, 377th Support Brigade, and served as president of Chapter 8, the Reserve Officers Association (ROA), for two years. After serving many years as president, he was honored to be named Chairman Emeritus of the A.S.I. Federal Credit Union. Private services were held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home with interment in All Saints Mausoleum.
