Edmond Joseph Muniz, local legend and community fixture, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the age of 83. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 10, 1940, to the late Joseph Muniz and Mamie Juenesse Muniz.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Nette Muniz; daughters Mary Muniz d’Aquin (Darryl), Michelle Muniz Hanzo (Jim), Margie Muniz Bateman (Dave); grandchildren David d’Aquin (Caitlin), Erica d’Aquin Murray (Andy), Tori Hanzo Battle (Blake), Jamie Hanzo; great-grandchildren Alice Lillian Murray and Baby Battle due June 2023.
Edmond attended St. Rose de Lima grammar school and was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and Loyola University. He served in the Air National Guard.
He had the distinction of being the longest running Captain in Mardi Gras history, having been Captain of the Krewe of Endymion—which he himself founded and named in honor of a racehorse he’d made a winning bet on-- for 57 years. Though Endymion has long held a reputation for being one of most opulent and spectacular parades, it was founded, first and foremost, with the idea of fun in mind.
In addition to his significant contributions to New Orleans culture and to Mardi Gras history, he took an active and interested role in the community. He served as the mayor of Kenner, Louisiana and was on the Kenner City Council and the Jefferson Parish Council for several years. Additionally, he served on the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Advisory Committee, the New Orleans Association of Broadcasters, and East Jefferson Hospital Board. He was a parishioner of Divine Mercy.
He was a man of many passions, extended beyond the three he’d famously quipped were his the works of his life—radio, politics, and Mardi Gras. He also loved travelling and spending time with his family at home and on trips to Destin, Florida.
Though he found extraordinary success throughout many of his ambitious endeavors, he remained a faithful and humble man, always quick to give credit to the Lord he felt that blessed him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Steve Knecht, Sitters Plus: Nina King, Candice Meyers, Kim Lebraud, Kayla Lebraud, Joseph Ries- At Home Health Care and Dr. Alan Yager, MD and staff.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at the Pontchartrain Center, 4545 Williams Blvd, Kenner, LA 70065 beginning at 10:00 am followed by a Catholic Liturgy Service at 2:00pm, Rev. Paul Clark and Rev. Tom Guido presiding. A private interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Alzheimer’s Association, New Orleans Mission and the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
