Earl Joseph Magner, Jr.

Earl Joseph Magner, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 17, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on August 5, 1933, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduating from Holy Cross High School, he continued his studies at LSU earning a degree in Civil Engineering and Land Surveying. In his senior year at LSU, he married his high school sweetheart, June Pourciau, and they began building a loving and faithful family of eight children. Upon graduating from LSU, he started his Civil Engineering career with the Louisiana Department of Public Works. He was the District Engineer for East Jefferson, Lafourche Basin, Chalmette Back Levee, Lake Borgne Basin and Pontchartrain Levee Districts, District Engineer with Louisiana Department of Public Works and Chief Engineer of Orleans Levee District. After retiring from the State of Louisiana he continued his career with St. Tammany Parish as Senior Subdivision Engineer. Earl held positions of President of the Louisiana Chapter of Public Works Organization and Engineering Committee Chairman of the Lower Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association.

It would be an understatement to say that Earl was an avid golfer. He was President of City Park Golf Club and Golf Committee Chairman at Covington Country Club. While their family was growing, he was an active participant in the Catholic Church as President of St. Jerome Parish Council and Nativity of Our Lord Parish Council. Earl and June were mentors of the in-home CCD Program, Director of N.O. Crusillo Movement, Associates of Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic and co-chairman of National Organization of Retreats International. While their children were growing up, he was President of Wentwood Boosters. Earl and June went on to manage Regina Coeli Retreat Center in Covington from 1985-2002. His final years of retirement were spent in Abita Springs, LA.

Earl is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years June Pourciau Magner; his parents Vera Munroe Magner and Earl Joseph Magner Sr.; along with his son Kenneth Earl Magner; his sisters Thais Brody (Steve) and Glen Rose Gillan (Noel); Father-in-law Stanley J. Pourciau Sr.; Mother-in-law Pearl Cavalier Pourciau; and Brother-in-law Stanley J. Pourciau Jr. He is survived by his loving children; daughters Cheryl Reade (Mickey), Susan Basso (Mike), Jackie Battaglia (Joey) and Lesley Wandler (Scott); his sons Mitchell Magner (Becky), Karl Magner (Bridget), Chris Magner (Denise); grandchildren Jay Leonard (Jessica), Cory Leonard (Mika), Ashley Navarro (Todd), Sarah Helluin (Chris), Kaitlyn Moheng (Jeffrey), Bradley Magner (Caitlin), Christian Hebert (Justin), Caroline Colomb (Mark), Claire Holcomb (Sean), Kenny Magner (Taylor), Jeffrey Magner, Joseph Battaglia IV, Alex Babin (Kyle), Jack Wandler (Taylor), and Luke Battaglia; Great-Grandchildren Joey and Jude Leonard; TJ, Scarlett and Isiah Navarro; Lydia, Chloe, Evelyn and Mia Helluin; Seth, Hunter, Annabell and Weslynn Moheng; Belle, Ben, Nikolai and Liam Magner; Kate and James Hebert; Camille and Reese Colomb; Cullen Holcomb and John Wandler; his sisters-in-law Linda Landry, Patty Krakowski (Gary) and Janice Pourciau; along with many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, Louisiana on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Earl will be laid to rest in Metairie Cemetery following the chapel service.
