Dora Elvira Castro de Pascual passed away peacefully at home in New Orleans on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. At almost 99 years old, Dora was blessed with a long, healthy and happy life. She was born on June 14, 1919 in the town of Medanos, Argentina, to Elvira Liboubaum de Castro and Luis Castro. She spent most of her life in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, before moving to New Orleans in 2003 to live with her daughter and family. Even though she didn’t speak English, Dora made a rich life for herself, testament to her quiet strength and optimistic worldview. Dora enjoyed walking in Audubon Park. She was a talented seamstress, and loved knitting, embroidering, and painting. Her grandchildren will remember her fondly by the beautiful embroidered tablecloths she made for them; her great grandchildren and other loved ones by the many embroidered pillowcases, knitted sweaters, scarves and potholders. Dora was an avid reader all her life, taking on the Harry Potter and Twilight series at the same time as her great grandchildren. She travelled extensively with her husband, and after his passing, to visit her daughters in the U.S. and Spain, and to help her granddaughters in Philadelphia, Durham, and Houston with their newborns. Always supportive and encouraging, wise and kind, Dora was devoted to her family and proud of all her “descendants,” who often sought her counsel. She was loved by all she met and will be deeply missed by many. Dora was the beloved wife of the late Antonio Pascual. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Silvia Pascual (Enrique); brother, Ernesto Castro; and sister, Julia Gonzalez. Dora is survived by her daughter, Haydee Bazan and her husband Nicolas Bazan; and grandchildren, Patricia Bazan Garrubbo, Andrea Bazan, Nick Bazan III, Hernan Bazan, Maria Elvira Bazan, Gonzalo Hernandez, and Soledad Gomez. She had 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her. She also leaves behind her adored dogs, Luciano and Giuseppe. Friends and family members are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00 am in the Chapel at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am. Interment will be private.
