David Hyland Baron passed away peacefully on Monday, April 5, 2021 at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen de la Houssaye Baron, “Nuddy,” and his parents, Stanley Alphonse Baron and Minnie Hyland Baron, as well as his brothers, Stanley Alphonse Baron, Jr. and Richard Ramond Baron. He was born on December 5, 1934 and was a lifelong resident of New Orleans.
He is survived by his children: David Hyland Baron, Jr. (Alicia), Mary Ellen “Pie” Baron Pou (Michael), and John Douglas Baron; and his beloved grandchildren: Brooks Hyland Baron, David Hyland “Beau” Baron III, Ashley Elizabeth Pou and Michael Baron Pou.
He loved being a grandfather to his four grandchildren and was affectionately known as “Pops”. From tea parties with the girls to coaching sports with the boys, he never missed an event with his grandchildren.
David was in the masonry business for over 40 years, serving as Vice President of the McDougal Company for 21 years and later joined Masonry Products.
David and his brother Richard played football as a “backfield tandem” at De La Salle High School where he graduated in the first graduating class in 1953. He attended Tulane University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He was a member of Kappa Alpha order at both universities.
David’s love of golf started with a set of golf clubs given to him as a wedding present by his beloved wife Nuddy. He was an avid golfer for over 50 years and was a member of Lakewood Country Club, and Audubon Golf Club where he won several club championships. David was admired in the golf community for scoring a hole in one eleven times.
Woodworking was another interest of his and he handcrafted one of a kind Christmas Crêches for his friends and family. He made several pieces of furniture and taught a woodworking class at Delgado Community College.
For over eight years, David served in the United States National Guard, and was a member of several carnival organizations.
He will be missed by his family and many friends, especially his golf buddies.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Church on Monday, April 12, 2021, at noon, with visitation at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
