

Chew Wing Lee passed away peacefully on June 16, 2014. Born on August 2, 1924 in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China to the late Young Haing and Leung Si Lee, he was 89 years old. He immigrated to the United States at age 15 in October 1939. Upon arrival in New York City, he started working in the restaurant business. At age 18, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Nineteenth Battalion, Fourth Regiment before receiving an honorable discharge. In 1956, he relocated his family to New Orleans to start “Wing Lee Laundry.” For 48 years, he provided a much needed and appreciated service to his neighbors and community. The laundry became a landmark establishment in the historic French Quarter. He was well-liked and respected by his customers, friends, and neighbors. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Tung Hoy Lee, daughters Gim Chiappetta, May Denstedt (husband Arthur), Esther Gin (husband John), son James Lee (wife Linda), grandchildren Anisse Peters (husband Rob), Leslie Latimer (husband Keith), Lauren Thomas (husband Kyle), Jacqueline Lee, Stephen Lee, great grandchildren Craig Peters, Ella Peters, Jacob Thomas, and Ava Thomas. He was preceded in death by son-in-law Bill Chiappetta and granddaughter Elizabeth Gin. Visitation will be held on Saturday June 21, 2014 from 10:00am-12:00pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on 5100 Ponchartrain Blvd. Funeral services will be held at noon.
