Dr. Chang Han passed away peacefully on September 26, 2021, at the age of 58 after a valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving daughter, Shuo Huang; her father, Fulin Han (Zhao); two sisters, Song Han (Li) and Jun Zhao (Dong); a brother, Gang Han (Yu); and her former husband and father of their daughter, Steven Huang. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shufang Liu.
Dr. Han was born in Lanzhou, China, the eldest of four children. While her family knew her as their deeply caring sister and daughter, she was also a brilliant scholar, earning her MD/PhD at Harbin Medical University in China, and completed postdoctoral studies at the Institute of Genetics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She moved to the United States with her husband and daughter in 1998 and continued her impressive academic research career in prevention and treatment of liver cancer at institutions such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Pittsburgh, and Tulane University School of Medicine.
After becoming an Associate Professor of Pathology at Tulane in 2009, Dr. Han was an integral part of the Tulane Cancer Center. She experienced all sides of the center, both as a respected faculty member, then later as a patient in need of complex care from a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals in the departments of oncology, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology.
In order to honor the multi-faceted relationship she had with the Tulane Cancer Center, please consider a donation made to the Tulane Cancer Center Research Fund in Honor-Memory of Dr. Han by visiting www.canceriscurable.com and clicking on “Giving”. Dr. Han’s family asks donations to please be made in “Honor-Memory of Dr. Chang Han.”
Amidst the current uncertainty about feasibility of in person gatherings, Dr. Han’s family is choosing to have an online tribute instead of a formal funeral. Dr. Han would have appreciated a celebration of her life including the sharing of memories and wishes as she was constantly touched by the relationships she had with many wonderful friends and colleagues, as well as her family; please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com to contribute.
