Blackwell Bugg Evans, Jr., MD, died in New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 14, 2024. He was born on August 24, 1950, in Richmond, Virginia, son of the now deceased Blackwell Bugg Evans, Sr., MD, and his wife June Banks Evans. He is survived by his mother, June Banks Evans, of Lunenburg County, Virginia, and his uncle, Gary Morris Banks, of Scituate, Massachusetts.
He moved with his parents to New Orleans in 1961, and later graduated from Isidore Newman School. In 1972, following two years at Stanford University, he completed a BA in History at Tulane University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. At Tulane, he subsequently received a Medical Doctorate in 1977 and completed a residency in Internal Medicine and an NIH Fellowship in Pulmonary Immunology. After six years in private practice in Slidell, Louisiana, he returned to Tulane University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 1989, Dr. Evans was the organizer and Medical Director of Tulane’s first Ambulatory Care Satellite Clinic, which later moved to Uptown Square as the Uptown Clinic. In 1997, he became Medical Director of the Tulane University Preferred Health Plan; and, from 2002, served as Executive Director until the self-funded plan terminated in 2003. During his later years as an Associate Professor of Medicine, Dr. Evans was actively teaching students and residents as an Attending on the Medicine wards of the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.
Whether sailing on Lake Pontchartrain, relaxing with friends at Saturday afternoon wine-tastings, caring for his patients, exploring the tall stand of loblollies on the family farm in Virginia, rambling the quiet lanes of Burgundy, stirring fresh gumbo in his kitchen, striding in sunshine along a New Orleans levee, or engrossed in yet another book, Blackwell Evans enjoyed life, not as adventure but as fulfillment.
A private ceremony is planned for his burial at Providence United Methodist Church, Forksville, Virginia.
The Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory, South Hill, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, his memory may be honored by contributions to Reach Out and Read, 89 South Street, Suite 201, Boston, MA 02111. (reachoutandread.org).
