John E. Conroy

Mr. Conroy was born on June 29, 1934 in Astoria, NY, the son of the late John J. Conroy and Elizabeth Kelly. John attended Queens Vocational High School in Queens, NY. He served in the Navy and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. His duty assignment was on the Attack Squadron 45 VA-45. He completed his service and received an honorable discharge. After his discharge from the Navy, John began working as a milkman until a tragic accident almost took his life. After being in the hospital for rehabilitation for almost a year, John had to find a new career. He attended Manhattan Technical Institute in New York City where he completed an Electrical-Electronic Drafting Program. He began his drafting career working for companies such as M. Rosenblatt & Son, and Jaros, Baum and Bolles both located in New York City. He also worked for General Dynamics which is what brought he and his family to CT. He ended his drafting career working for Stone & Webster at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station. John then worked for the Town of East Lyme driving the bus for the East Lyme Senior Center. He was always a hard worker, sometimes working two jobs to provide for his family and never once complained. He will aways be remembered for his bright blue eyes, beautiful smile, sweet disposition, and of course his humor. Prior to the decline in his health, John resided at Bacon and Hinkley in New London. He loved sitting in his chair with his binoculars watching the boats and submarines going in and out of the river. The staff and the residents at Bacon and Hinkley were like a second family to him. John was an avid bowler in his early years and also enjoyed spending time with his daughter doing ceramics. He loved watching the New York Yankees and the New York Rangers with his son Dan any chance he could get. He spent many years attending his grand children’s baseball and softball games, dance recitals and plays. He was know to them as "D-Dad” and before long, close friends and family also called him by that name. During the last year the one wish he had was to be able to meet his Great Grandchild. Thankfully, Emme Katherine was born on July 7th, 2022. He had the opportunity to hold her, and facetime with her these last few months. Just the mention of her name would light up his face. The family would like to send a special thank you to the 5.1 Rehab Unit at Lawrence & Memorial for the excellent care they provided John throughout his hospitalizations. Their hard work, dedication, and compassion go beyond words. They would also like to thank Paul, and Patrick from Sunshine Elderly Care for the wonderful care they provided. Mr. Conroy was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Alice “Pat” Conroy. He is survived by his son, Daniel Conroy and partner Kim Baran of Colchester; daughter Susan Curcio and her husband Thomas of New London; grandchildren Justin Curcio and his fiancé Koryn of Mystic and Alyssa Curcio Iovino and her husband Kory of Preston; great-granddaughter, Emme Iovino. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his son, John M. Conroy.
