Albert A. , passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the age of 81. Van, as he was known was born on July 25, 1930 to Helen and Edward Van Alstyne in the Bronx, New York. Van was a long time resident of the Bronx and Queens, most recently from Glen Oaks, New York. Having joined the Marine Corp in 1948, serving on active duty until 1952, Van served in the Korean conflict and survived the battle of the Chosin Reservoir. He also served in the National Guard where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel, in the 69th Infantry. Van was a proud member of the New York City Police Department, serving in the Emergency Service Division of the Harbor Unit prior to retiring. Van is also a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He is predeceased by his wife Helen (Riso). He is survived by his four children, Michael and his wife Anita from Wyckoff, New Jersey, Helen Van Alstyne from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Steven and his wife Joann from Howell, New Jersey and Richard and his fiancé Marianne from Mamaroneck, New York.
He was the cherished grandfather of his grandchildren, Jonathan, Andrew, Nicole, Stephanie, Ryan and Gregory.
Van dedicated his life to his family; his family and friends were everything to him.
He will be greatly missed and will live forever in our hearts.
Interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
