She was born and grew up on a farm outside of Onamia, MN along with eight brothers and sisters. As a young girl she worked in Minneapolis and eventually moved to Detroit, Michigan where her cousin and best friend Mary Ryska lived.
She returned to Minneapolis where she made a living driving cab. She then worked at Honeywell, where she was involved in their charitable organization, the Honeybelles, until her retirement. It was there she met Albert Barry whom she married. They purchased a home in Blaine where they lived for many years. They later divorced and she and their son David stayed in Blaine until he graduated from college.
She moved to an apartment in New Hope, MN after her retirement. After that she moved to Saint Therese‘s Retirement and Care Center also in New Hope.
Sophie loved playing cards and dancing, going to as many dances as she could. It was at one of these that she met her dear friend forever, Youva Klucsar, and they enjoyed dancing until his death. After that, she spent her time staying in touch with her many family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her Parents, Lawrence and Sophie Szabla; her Sisters, Mary Fidler, Ann Szabla and Helen Ornat; her Brothers, John Szabla, Lawrence Szabla and Albert Szabla and Friend, Youva Klucsar; Two Great-grandchildren, Charles and Cora and several Nieces and Nephews.
She is survived by her Son, David and his Wife Bonnie Selmer; two Brothers, Casmire and his wife Laura (Sue) and Joseph; and Many Nieces and Nephews. She also is survived by Two Grandchildren, Gina and Scott Kircher and Nathan and Becky Selmer as well as their Children and Grandchildren.
