Thomas David O’Connell, age 77, a longtime resident of Valley Cottage, NY, passed away on October 14, 2024, with his family by his side. Born on January 7, 1947, in The Bronx, NY, Tom, fondly called "TOC", was the beloved son of the late David and Mabel (Pfriender) O’Connell, and brother to the late Karen O'Connell. He is survived and cherished forever by his wife of over 54 years, Rose; his son, Jim, and his wife, Nikki, and their children, Ryan, Aidan, and Madison; his daughter, Maureen DeSantis, and her husband, Marc, and their children, Quentin, Patrick, and Amelia; his son, Thomas Jr.; and his daughter, Colleen Grady, and her husband, Shane, and their children, Dylan and Ella. He also leaves behind his sister, Norine Olsen; his sister-in-law, Barbara O'Connor; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who shared a special bond with him.
Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and honorably served in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star with a V Device and the Thai Medal of Valor, becoming the first U.S. soldier ever to receive Thailand's only award for heroism. In 1970, he joined the FDNY, dedicating over 29 years of service fearlessly protecting the lives of others at Engine 83/Ladder 29 in the South Bronx.
Tom’s love for his FDNY family was surpassed only by his love for his wife and family. He enjoyed telling anyone and everyone about his kids and their exploits. More recently, his grandchildren were the subject of his numerous stories, as he delighted in them and their adventures. Tom was known for his kindness, humor, helpfulness, and quick wit. He loved going on vacations, especially when it meant spending time at the ocean. Tom was an amazing cook and enjoyed meeting old friends for lunch. He loved playing golf and took pleasure in following his favorite sports teams. He also enjoyed attending various sporting events, especially when members of his family were on the field.
Tom’s dedication to public service and his devotion to his family and friends will forever be remembered. His kindness and courage have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace knowing that his legacy lives on through those he loved and inspired.
