John J. Fisher, from Haverstraw, NY, formerly from New City, 90 years old, passed away surrounded by family on March 13, 2022. He is survived by his four loving children: John P. Fisher (Patricia), Susan O’Keefe (Michael), Cathy Nassivera (John), and Judith Macalena (Daniel), his thirteen grandchildren: Andrea Wooster (Christopher), Kaitlyn Althoff (Robert), Keri Armbrust (Kevin), Kelsey Pellicone (Christopher), John Patrick Fisher, Kate O’Keefe, Christopher O’Keefe (Laura), Patrick O’Keefe, Cassandra Nassivera, John Nassivera, Brianne Maddalena (Vinny), Daniel Macalena (Alexa), and Michelle Macalena and her fiancé Brian Crosby, and his fifteen great grandchildren.
John is also survived by his brother Charles Fisher (Anna) and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his wife Catherine, who he was married to for 63 years, and his sister Madeline Manning.
John was born in Bronx, NY to Rose and John Fisher on December 26, 1931. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School and soon after began a career as a stationary engineer. John retired from the New York City Board of Education after over 30 years. He was acknowledged through many awards and letters of appreciation from the New York City Board of Ed for his dedication and contributions. As a resident of New City for over 55 years, John was an active member of St. Augustine’s Parish. There, he was a member of the Holy Name Society.
John married Catherine in 1954. They enjoyed traveling, haven taken many trips throughout Europe and the United States. John looked forward to his annual trips to Disney World in Orlando, FL with Catherine and his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He created lifelong memories with his family on these trips.
John will be remembered for his great sense of humor, deep faith, and endless generosity, as well as his love for storytelling and embellishing details. He was committed to a healthy lifestyle, was an avid reader, and had a passion for history. John’s greatest passion was for his wife Catherine, his family, and his treasured lifelong friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 at Higgins Funeral Home, New City, NY. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Church, New City, NY. Interment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake, NY.
