Agnes Quigley (Murphy), known as Oona by all who loved her, passed away on Saturday, September 16 at the age of 88. Surrounded by her family, Oona entered the eternal embrace of her heavenly Father in the same manner she had lived: with grace, peace and dignity.
The daughter of Bernard and Agnes Murphy, Oona was born January 11, 1929 and grew up in Richmond Hill, NY the second of four children. In 1951 she married her great love, Robert (Bob) Quigley. The couple moved to New City in 1959 and there made their home, raising a family, building lifelong friendships and faithfully worshipping at St. Augustine RC Church.
Oona began her career in the late 1940s at AT&T. She worked for Bamberger’s (later Macy’s) department store for more than a decade before joining Rockland County’s Personnel Department in 1987. She worked for the county for 17 years, retiring in 2004.
Oona loved the simple pleasure of a cup of tea and a plate of cookies and when shared with a loved one, her joy was doubled. Oona and Bob had the gift of hospitality, often welcoming family and friends into their home for happy gatherings. They taught their children there is always room for everyone. We each hold unique memories of Oona; together we will remember her faith, wisdom, sweet nature, kind heart and beautiful smile.
Oona was predeceased by her husband of forty-seven years, her brother James and her grandson Eric Robert Fegan. She is survived by her four devoted children: Bob (Marilyn), Patti (Jim) Fegan, John (Pam) and Jeanne. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren: Meaghan, Kevin, Kelly, Shannon and Colette; her beloved sister, Mary Habacker, and her brother Bernard Murphy; and dozens of nieces and nephews who cherished their dear Aunt Oona.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, September 19, 2-4 + 7-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 S. Main St., New City, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine Church, New City, NY on Wednesday, September 20 at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 301 N. Main St. Suite 7, New City, NY 10956 or St. Augustine Church, 140 Maple Ave., New City, NY 10956.
