Roy Clinton Garrett

Roy Clinton Garrett, of Canyon Lake, Texas, lovingly known by his family as Buck, Uncle Buck and Papaw left this earthly life on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the age of 76. Roy passed away at his hunting lease in Artesia Wells doing what he loved most, hunting, sitting by the campfire and reminiscing about precious memories of the good old days. His sudden death was believed to be as a result of a heart attack. Roy was born on May 29, 1936 on Prentiss County, Mississippi to Curtis Mansel Garrett and Annie Zell Wilson Garrett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Tom; baby sister, Lessie Arene and sister Ruby Robinson.

Roy grew up in Belmont, Mississippi. He left Belmont to serve in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Harlingen, Texas. After serving in the military he moved to San Antonio, Texas and worked for Mobil Oil Co. That is where he met the love of his life, Rebecca Jean Garrett (Hardwick). They married on January 25, 1965 in San Antonio, Texas. Roy was an avid supporter and charter member of the San Antonio Junior Livestock Exposition which raises money for scholarships for many children in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Roy was instrumental in the formation of the Converse Little League and the development of the Converse City Park where he umpired for many years. He was an active member of the Converse Lions Club for many years and held every office in the club. He also served at the District level and enjoyed years of camaraderie with his fellow Lions. Roy was a lifetime member of the Texas Lions Camp which provides camping opportunities for children with special needs. He was president of the San Antonio Better Business Bureau from 1985 through 1986. He served as a deacon for the Kirby Church of Christ before moving from Garden Ridge to Canyon Lake. He and his family joined the New Braunfels Church of Christ where he has been a member for over 22 years. He has received numerous awards for his outstanding service and generous contributions to the community.

Roy was owner and operator of Roy C. Garrett. Inc., which specialized in the construction of Marley Cooling Towers from 1972 until his retirement in 2001. Roy loved to hunt and fish, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He loved to barbeque and usually cooked enough for an army. He was a charter member of the San Antonio Spurs and a season ticket holder for over twenty five years.

He is survived and forever cherished by his wife Becky; son Marley Keith Garrett and wife Gladys; daughter Lisa Lasseter and four precious grandchildren, Kayla, Brooke and Haley Lasseter, Chase Garrett and wife Kelsey and one-great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Elisabeth Garrett all of New Braunfels, Texas. He is also survived by brother, Donald Garrett and wife Katherine of Kansas City, MO.; sisters, Lalla Ryan and Lucille Sparks of Belmont, MS., as well as numerous nieces; nephews; and acquired step grandchildren. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Roy will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

His motto in life was live, love and give back generously which he did until his death. He was a devout Christian man and served the Lord and others with all of his heart. His family finds comfort knowing confidently that he is in a perfect place.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Roy’s life will be held at the New Braunfels Church of Christ, 1665 S. Business IH 35 on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the New Braunfels Church of Christ Building Fund; Boysville or the Texas Lions Camp.
