On January 24, 2015, Mary Evelyn (Schmidt) Jonas, known by many of her loved ones as Aunt Sissy, passed away peacefully in the company of her family. She was born to Herman & Louise (Bueche) Schmidt on November 26, 1924 in Bulverde, Texas. In her late teens, she moved with her family to New Braunfels. On October 23, 1946 Evelyn married Woodroe “Woody” Jonas and was later blessed with two sons, Donald and Darrell. Another blessing for Evelyn was the gift of five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was a wonderful seamstress for more than 30 years. Evelyn and Woody loved to dance from the beginning and later became members of the Starlite Ballroom Dance Club of New Braunfels, where she served as the decoration coordinator. She also contributed to the American Legion Auxiliary #179 for many years, including serving graciously as a President. She was an avid gardener and cared dearly for every cat that crossed her path.
She is preceded in death by both her parents, her brother Milton Schmidt, her husband Woodroe Jonas and her grand-daughter Melissa Jonas. She is survived by her brother Archie Schmidt and his wife Elrine (of New Braunfels, TX), her son Donald Jonas and his wife Mickey (of Fort Worth, TX), son Darrell Jonas and his wife Maureen (of Corpus Christi, TX). Grandchildren Jennifer (Jonas) Reider and husband Bart (of Sugar Land, TX), Christopher Jonas and wife Emily (of Deer Park, TX), Kimberly Jonas (of Fort Worth, TX), and Matthew Jonas (of Corpus Christi, TX). Great-grandchildren Grant McKay, Aubrey McKay, Darrell James “DJ” Reider and Madison Jonas.
Evelyn leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 5 pm until 8 pm at Zoeller Funeral Home. Funeral services to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held Friday January 30, 2015 at 1 pm at Zoeller Funeral Home with burial to follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
