John J. White, loving husband, amazing father and our family's cornerstone for generations, passed peacefully from this life on the afternoon of March 16, 2019. He was born on January 8, 1932 to John Edward White and Dorothy (Champney) White of New Lisbon, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two siblings, Bob White and JoAnn Wright. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Barbara Nelson and six children: John Michael, Mark Nelson, Teresa White Morton (Tim), Patrick Matthew (Rick), Christopher Luke, Mary White Yancey (John) as well as ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He earned five degrees starting with a bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert College and ending with a Doctorate in Education from LSU. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Department for twenty four years including Medical Batallion commander in Korea and later retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. After his military career, John became staff development coordinator in the Texas State Hospital system. During his military and state government careers, Dr. White taught evening university level courses for several colleges and universities.
John’s passions since childhood included trout fishing, especially in Wisconsin streams and Fall duck and deer hunting. He loved cooking for his family and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He excelled at playing the trumpet during his youth.
A visitation will be held Sunday, March 31 from 5-8 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home with a rosery at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be held Monday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, New Braunfels, Texas. Graveside service will be held Tuesday April 2 at 2 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
