James Robert (Jim) Peck passed away on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. He was born on July 21, 1925, to James H. and Helen Herberger Peck in Dayton, Ohio. After high school, he joined the US Navy ROTC and graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Texas at Austin in 1949. He soon took a job with Shell Oil Company and moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, where he met the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Alta Faye Strasner. They married in 1956 and lived in several west Texas towns including Midland, Ozona, and McCamey, then eventually Houston as he worked for Shell Oil over a career of 37 years as a production superintendent. After retirement, Jim and Alta moved to Tyler, Texas, where he volunteered at Mother Francis Hospital for 20 years, enjoyed gardening at home, and playing golf three days a week with his buddies. They moved to New Braunfels two years ago to be closer to “the kids”.
Jim is remembered by all who knew him as a gentle and intelligent man of the highest integrity. He was an amateur airplane pilot and an artist, with several of his oil paintings and ink drawings on display in his son’s local dental office. He was very proud of his five “hole in ones” in golf over his lifetime.
Jim is survived by his wife, Alta Faye Peck, his son Dr. Jim Peck and daughter in law Dr. Ramona Peck, granddaughter Meredith Peck, and grandson James Ryan Peck, all of New Braunfels. He is also survived by his sister in law Estalene Johniken of DeRidder, Louisiana.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, at 2pm at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church or to Hope Hospice.
