Eugene (Gene) Berthold Koenig, of New Braunfels, passed away peacefully Monday, May 29th, 2017. He was a loving husband of 65 years to wife Laura. Eugene was born near Melrose Community in Goliad County, Texas to Anton Louis and Sophie Walch Koenig in 1928. Gene, like his siblings, was born on the family farm, under modest circumstances, and grew up living in a 2 room farm house with 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Like many of the farming families at the time they dabbled in a lot of different enterprises, but growing cotton was their mainstay. Gene joined the military and was stationed in post war Germany as part of the “Constabulary” or peace keeping force where he met Laura. They were married on May 13, 1952 in Weesatche, Texas and soon settled in New Braunfels with both taking jobs at Mission Valley Mills where they worked until retirement.
Gene, along with his wife, was very active in the Community Center, the American Legion, Habitat for Humanity and Cross Lutheran Church as well as many other volunteer projects.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Laura; his brother, Louis Koenig of New Braunfels; brother, Leroy Koenig and wife Marie of Yorktown; brother, Melvin Koenig and wife Peggy of Victoria; sister, Elizabeth Mason of Schertz; sister, Estella Muschalek of Gillette; and sister, Aleen Stevenson and husband Walter of Montgomery, Alabama; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Eugene was loved by all.
