Shelia Robin Cayton (née Sutton), age 66, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away on July 23, 2024. Born on January 17, 1958, in Kinston, NC, Shelia's life was marked by her dedication to education and her love for her family.
Shelia graduated from White Oak High School before earning her degrees from Peace College and East Carolina University. She had a distinguished career in education, serving as a National Board Certified Teacher, an assistant principal at Trent Park Elementary School, and an Academically Gifted Program Leader in Craven County. Shelia's passion for teaching was evident as she touched many lives at West Craven Middle School, Oaks Road, and Ben D. Quinn Elementary Schools. Her commitment extended beyond the classroom as she worked as a North Carolina State curriculum coach, influencing educational practices across the state.
A devout member of Temple Church, Shelia's faith was integral to her life. She found joy in the outdoors, whether camping, hiking, or simply spending time at the beach. Above all, she cherished moments with her grandchildren, Eliza and Mallory, creating lasting memories during play.
Shelia is survived by her loving husband, Keith; sons, Drew (Cari), Will, and Josh (Shelby); her sister, Jackie (Tim); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley Robinson Sutton and William Kenneth Sutton.
Services to honor Shelia's life will be held on Saturday, July 27, 4:00 PM at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, a cause close to her heart. Shelia's legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
