Richard (Red) James McConnell, beloved husband and father, born September 7, 1925, died peacefully on March 31, 2012 at his home in New Bern, NC. He was born in Erie, PA and lived there for most of his life, son of the late Edward Charles and Edith Irene McConnell. He was preceded in death by his brothers William and John McConnell. During World War II, Rich served overseas with the United States Navy on the USS Coghlan. After returning from the war he was employed by the General Telephone and Electronics Corporation (GTE) and retired with 35 years of service. Rich was a member of the River Bend Mens’ Golf Association and loved nothing more than being on the golf course with friends or family. Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years Marie Therese McConnell; two sons: Richard McConnell of Quinault, WA; and Edward McConnell (Elaine) of Colorado Springs, CO; and five daughters: Maryann Routh (Steve) of Damascus, MD; Kathleen McConnell (Jack) of Baltimore, MD; Susan Unger (Joseph) of Mechanicsville, VA; Barbara Jean Jancse (Kirk) of Warrenton, VA; and Eileen McConnell (Mike) of Palo Alto, CA; and eleven grandchildren: Eric, Jennifer and Daniel Routh, Justin and Emily Unger, Travis McConnell, Jessica, Anna and Shane McConnell and Olivia and Mitchell Jancse.
Friends may call at Cotten Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 3rd from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary service following. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 4th at 2:00 p.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
