Phyllis graduated from New Bern High School in 1958. She attended college in Richmond to obtain her X-Ray technician certification, then returned home and briefly worked in the medical field. It was during this time she married the love of her life, Graham, and dedicated herself to building a strong, loving family.
She lived her life in genuine service of others. Phyllis was a true friend and help to anyone in need, spending countless hours preparing home-cooked meals and famously delicious desserts, bringing flowers, and dedicating time to those who could not care for themselves. Reflective of her good nature, she was a gray lady at the hospital for several years.
A devoted long-time member of Riverdale United Methodist Church, Phyllis was a participant in many activities in the church, including United Methodist Women and the choir. She also enjoyed doing yardwork for the church.
Phyllis’s love for the outdoors shone through in the garden she and Graham tended for many years. Even late in life, you’d find her clearing limbs from the pasture. Her rose bushes brought her joy, and she enjoyed sharing them with others.
Phyllis was a wonderful mother to her children and a selfless caregiver to extended family. One of her last messages to us was how fortunate and blessed she felt in her life, how complete her love was for all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We are heartbroken by her absence, yet we find comfort in knowing she has been reunited with her eternal love, Graham, and many other family and friends. We look forward to the day we will be together again.
She is survived by her son, Jeff Williams (Penny), daughters Phyllis Pate (Tim), Susan Robertson (Jerry), nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, R. Graham Williams; parents Josiah Jeremiah Hughes and Bettie Marie Latham Hughes; brothers Johnnie Hughes and Josiah Hughes; sister Jennie Ailene Hughes; daughter Amy Joan Williams and great grandson Noah Graham Williams.
A celebration of her life will be held at Riverdale United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 2:00pm. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall at 1:00pm. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Riverdale United Methodist Church – Snack Pack Project, 5195 US Hwy 70, New Bern, NC 28562, a cause close to her heart.
