Norman Duane Smith

Mr. Norman D. Smith was born in Corning, New York on 23 February 1935. He did undergraduate work in electrical engineering at both St. Lawrence University and the Rochester Institute of technology prior to entering the U.S. Naval Aviation program as a naval cadet in 1957. He now holds a Bachelor of Science degree in technology management from the University of Maryland.

Mr. Smith received his officer commission and naval aviation wings in July 1958. Upon graduation from the Naval Photography School, he served as a naval reconnaissance pilot while serving in the Pacific theater. Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy from 1957-1963 as both a naval aviator and a naval intelligence officer. He continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve program from which he retired in 1980. Upon discharge from the Navy in July 1963, he served approximately one year with the Central Intelligence Agency in the area of imagery intelligence.

In 1964, Mr. Smith returned to the Department of Navy where he was employed at the Naval Intelligence Support Center until 1982. During his 18-year civilian career with the Navy, Mr. Smith served as Chief of Naval Intelligence Processing System (NIPS) development (1966-1970), pioneered digital imagery processing within the Navy (1970-1974), served as Chief of Imagery Technology (1974-1979), and in 1979 he became the Deputy Department Head, Imagery Analysis Department (1979-1983).

In October 1983, Mr. Smith assumed the position of Chief, Imagery Division at the Defense Intelligence Agency. He became a member of the Defense Intelligence Senior Executive Service in 1984. In February 1986, Mr. Smith was delegated, by the Director, DIA, the functional responsibility for DoD imagery management. In December 1988, Mr. Smith assumed the staff position as Special Assistant for Intelligence Community Affairs. In this capacity, he is responsible for coordinating all-source intelligence disciplines within the intelligence community as they pertain to policy and planning. He also serves as the DIA and U&S Commands' representative to the DCI's Committee on Imagery Requirements and Exploitation (COMIREX), a position he has held since 1983.

Upon retiring from his Military and Government service, Mr. Smith relocated to New Bern, N.C. to be closer to his grandchildren. He worshiped and made friends at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was devoted to his faith as a devout Christian.

Mr. Smith was married for 57 years to his loving wife Margot Anne Kelly who preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughter, Donna Lynn LiVolsi; son, Jeffrey Mark Smith and wife Megan; sister, Arlene Joan Matlock; grandchildren Ryan Jeffrey Smith, Nicholas William LiVolsi, Kelley Elizabeth Stepherson and husband Evan and great granddaughter, Charlotte Anne Stepherson.

Mr. Smith will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.
