Marjorie Ida (Allport) Edgerton, aged 90 years, resident of New Bern, North Carolina and former long time resident of Dorset, Vermont, passed away on September 8, 2017 at the Bayview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Bern, North Carolina of cause’s incident to age.
Marjorie was born September 24, 1926 in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada being the third child and second daughter of Roy Allport (Darius, Thomas) and Phyllis Wilson (John Bell, Andrew). She grew up in the small railroad town of Smiths Falls, attending local schools in the area. She was always somewhat adventuresome even in her youth, at one time climbing and being caught on the high water tower above her home town. In later years she exhibited this yearn for adventure with her many travels throughout the world. She was an accomplished tennis player and later ski instructor.
Marjorie graduated from McGill University, Montreal, Canada in 1948. Later, as an employee of the Dorset Inn in Dorset, VT she met a local farm gentleman and dashing ex-Navy Air Corp instructor, Leon Edgerton at a Village Green dance during the summer of 1948. They continued their romance from that point forward with Leon often flying his Stearman biplane back and forth between Vermont and Ontario for short visits.
On November 12, 1949 Marjorie married Leon Edgerton in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada and thereupon they resided in Dorset, VT – initially in a small cottage on Peace St. just north of the Village and after the death of Leon’s mother in 1959, at the picturesque Edgerton (formerly Dwight Sykes’) Farm at the foot of the Danby Mt. Road and Route 30 one mile north of the Dorset Village. They provided well for their family with Leon being a self-employed, certified seed grower in the Dorset and Champlain Valleys in addition to being an award-winning, local sugar-maker and Marjorie often putting up boarders in their large, colonial farm home for extra income. Both Marjorie and Leon were members of the Dorset Congregational Church for many years. They were active as "Vermont Flying Farmers" during their family years and traveled in their Cessna 182 plane across much of the country.
Leon and Marjorie raised a family of three sons and one daughter in Dorset. She always pushed her children to be the very best they could in all things and was generally successful in that endeavor. All her children graduated from local universities, some going on to garner advanced degrees. In their youth, all three of her sons went on to earn Eagle Scout Awards in the Boy Scouts of America.
Her husband Leon passed away in 1996 and in later years she lived in the warmer climes of New Bern, North Carolina with her daughter Beth.
Marjorie is survived by her youngest sister, Claribell (Estlick) of Toronto, Canada; son, Brian Edgerton (Deborah) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; son, Brent Edgerton (Kathy) of Cornish, New Hampshire; son, Blair Edgerton (Megan) of Hailey, Idaho: and daughter Beth Edgerton of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and numerous grandchildren.
Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Dorset Village, Vermont (private service).
Family and friends hope that Marjorie has finally found peace with her Heavenly Father - a lasting peace for which she strived and struggled throughout her life.
