Lawrence “Larry” Whitney, a father, husband, and consummate problem solver; whose life was spent helping others, was born in Philadelphia, the middle son of Mabel and Myron Whitney. He grew up in the post war suburbs of Chicago and then in Maryland. He graduated from Townson Sr. High School in Maryland in 1958 and then Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA in 1963 with a degree in Engineering Mechanics.
He was hired immediately after college by IBM and retired in 1992. In 1964, he married Connie Ricksecker. While at IBM he developed and programmed DOS Power which resulted in a three year stay in West Germany (1975-1978), working, skiing, and playing tennis with his children Nancy and Steve.
In 1995, Connie and Larry moved to New Bern, NC. There Larry, helped Christ Episcopal Church IRM (Interfaith Refugee Ministry) and neighbors in River Bend, with their computers.
In 2020, Larry with his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s began his stay in a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grantsboro, NC where he received excellent care.
Surviving are his wife, Connie; brother, Bob (Barbara); sister in law, Judy; daughter, Nancy (Rick); son, Steve (Sara) and grandson, Kyler; nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held, November 12, 2022 at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church downtown New Bern. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent or given to Christ Episcopal Church, 320 Pollock St., New Bern, NC 28560 or Interfaith Refugee Ministry, 1913 Trent Blvd, New Bern, NC 28560.
