Laura (Ann) Annell Overholt, 85, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2024, at home. She was born on January 16, 1939, in Blakely, Georgia, to the late Inza Nell and Kennie Millard Arnold.
Laura, affectionately known as Ann and Gamzy to her grand and great-grandchildren, married Hugh R Overholt on May 6, 1961, and they enjoyed a loving and faithful marriage for over six decades. Major General Hugh R. Overholt, former Judge Advocate General of the US Army, survives her along with their children; Sharon Overholt Maxey (Jason) of New Bern and H Scott Overholt (Ruthy) of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashton Overholt Baker (Michael) and Grayson Overholt (Significant other Sarah) of Wrightsville Beach, three step grandchildren Jillian Maxey, Julia Maxey, Jackson Maxey and two great-grandsons, Sebastian Baker, and Sawyer Baker. She is further survived by her sister, Betty Arnold Wolfrom (Tom) of Stone Mountain, Ga.
Ann grew up in Blakely, Ga., with her brother Roy Arnold (Celester) and two sisters, Mary Eleanor Arnold Adams (Roy) and Betty Arnold Wolfrom (Tom). She excelled in sports during her time at Blakely High School, lettering in both basketball and cheerleading. Ann was crowned the Early County Peanut Queen in 1958-59, representing her community at various events.
While attending the University of Alabama, Ann met Captain Hugh R. Overholt of the U.S. Army in 1960. The couple was stationed in Germany for a few years, where their daughter, Sharon Lea Overholt, was born. Upon their return to the U.S., their son, H. Scott Overholt, was born.
Ann and Hugh spent many years on various Army Posts, with a significant portion of their time in the Washington, D.C. area. Ann was a gracious host, organizing numerous special occasions for dignitaries. After her husband's retirement, Ann and Hugh retired to New Bern, NC, where she enjoyed her passion for golf.
Ann saw the world with her love, taking in sunrises in Korea and Taipei, the majestic Alps, the rolling hills of Ireland, and their most favorite place, Aruba. These adventures created cherished memories that illuminated her life.
Ann will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished her family and friends, leaving a legacy of love and warmth that will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The family is forever grateful for all the wonderful care providers who have been by her side Stacy, Natalie, Daphne, Anita, Evelyn, Memory, Davina, Jill, Ethel, Paticia, Michele, MaryAnn, David, Lynda, Cat, April, Mary, and Craven County Hospice.
A celebration of life will be held at New Bern Golf & Country Club March 6th at 3PM. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Laura (Ann) Overholt.
