Richard retired from a long and dedicated career at Foodland (now Piggly Wiggly) grocery store on Simmons Street in New Bern where he served and greeted many people whose friendships and acquaintances he cherished. He was the recipient of many awards at his employment to recognize his longevity and for the kind and caring service he provided to both his customers and coworkers. Richard was a long-time and active member of First Baptist Church of New Bern.
Preceded in death by his parents, James Richard Humphrey, Sr. and Anne Ragsdale Humphrey, he also mourned the loss in 2019 of his longtime friend and caregiver, Michael S. Monette. He is survived by cousins Hannah French (Clark), Patience Harvey (Rod) and Robert Lawton Blandford, Jr. (Janette) and special companion, Diane J. Thompson. Richard was also grateful for the friendship and care provided by his most recent caregiver, Matthew Weaver. As he never met a stranger and was friendly with everyone he met, Richard will be remembered by numerous people who knew him over many years.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at First Baptist Church of New Bern with Dr. Richard Seagle officiating. He will be laid to rest at a later date with his parents at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Richard's name to benefit the Guatemalan Mission in care of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1463, New Bern, NC 28563.
Arrangements are in the care of Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
