He served our country in the U.S. Marine Corp and Navy as a decorated veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a master mason, Scottish rite and a Shriner. He was a member of River Bend Baptist Church where he served as the chairman of the deacons. After retirement with the Corp of Engineers, he volunteered and built Kingswood Baptist Church in Brandon, FL and the Kingswood Baptist Church School and other church family life centers. He is preceded in death by his wife, Texie, and one daughter, Joline Petten.
James is survived by his son, Paul James Bryant and wife Doris of Germany; two daughters, Brenda King and husband Mitchell and Evelyn Lawrence and fiance’ Bill Howell, all of New Bern; two brothers, Stanley Bryant of Kentucky; Verlyn Bryant of Virginia; two sisters, Desi Roberts of Kentucky; Verina Earp of Raleigh, NC; 12 grandchildren, Adam King, Brian King, Eric Wheelis, Wynn Wheelis, Rusty Lawrence, Ashley Lawrence, Lloyd Petten and Michelle DeCamp, Paul Bryant, Jr., Betina Postles, Inga Bryant, Anita Bryant, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Hudson, NC for the immediate family.
