He served on the U.S.S. North Carolina during World War II. He was also a retired architect for Citibank in New York City.
He is survived by his wife Helga Westphal; son Karl Westphal of Bozeman, MT; daughter Christine Neumann of New Bern; and grandchildren Anja, Alexander, Laurence, Max and Ava.
