Don enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing, and hunting.
Don retired as a Colonel from the US Army Signal Corps in 1984. While in the service he and his family lived in Germany and Japan. Don also served in Korea and Vietnam.
After retiring from the Army, Don was Director of Operations for Government Systems Corporation, a division of GTE from 1984 - 1993.
Don received an Electrical Engineering degree from NYU and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico State University.
Don was devoted to his family, friends, his faith and to his church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Callahan; children, Beth Thurnau (Carl), Donald Callahan (Jadwiga), and Matthew Callahan; grandchildren, Kari Lewis Lavalley (Jamie), Megan Lewis, Abby Thurnau, Jake Thurnau, Ryan Klink (Chelsea), Karolina Callahan, Kevin Callahan, Hayden Callahan, Cole Callahan; great-grandchildren, Willie Klink, Joey Klink, Mira Lavalley, James Lavalley; and sister, Betty Powell.
Visitation will be at 6 pm and funeral mass will be 7:15 pm Saturday, September 3rd at St. Peter, Fisherman Catholic Church in Oriental. Graveside committal with military honors will be at 9:30 am Sunday, September 4th at the church cemetery.
