He was a Navy veteran serving in Vietnam as a corpsman and received the Purple Heart for sustaining wounds in combat. Upon returning from Vietnam, he went to work for Norfolk Southern RailRoad as a conductor until his retirement when he discovered his greatest joy in life which was being “Granddaddy” and going to all the football, baseball, softball, dance recitals and school functions he could.
Dennis, also known as “Butter Bean” at the hunting club, looked forward to deer season every year and was a diehard Ford Nascar fan. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with friends on multiple cross country trips.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years Pat Dixon, his parents Vernon W. Dixon, Sr. and Evelyn Holton Dixon, and his brother Vernon W. Dixon, Jr.
Dennis is survived by sons Dennis Dixon, Jr. (Nichole) and Chris Dixon (Angel) and Grandchildren Drew, Paige (Edwin), Nicholas (Ashlyn), Landon (McKenzie), Kylie, Riley, Makinley, great grandchild Asher, brothers-in-law Jerry Gibson, and Jack Gibson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, October 10, 2022 at Cotten Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 11:00am Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at Sandhill cemetery in Reelsboro.
