Alan “Al” Smith, 84, of New Bern, passed away April 18, 2013 at home.
Raised in Niagara Falls, Canada, he served his adopted country faithfully from July 1948 thru June 1952 with the U.S. Army. He obtained U.S. Citizenship in June of 1952.
Al and the family were ardent boaters and he was commodore of La Lalle Yacht Club in 1967 at Niagara Falls, New York. He did a lot of volunteer work (hospital and chamber) and drove Shriner’s children to the hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, for many years as a “Road Runner.” His memberships included Berne Lodge No. 724, Sudan Shrine Temple, Hospital Auxillary, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post No. 539 life member.
He was a father and grandfather who loved his family, church, and country. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Linda Smith Huling.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy J. Smith; his son in-law, Chip Huling and granddaughter, Zoe Rose Huling, of Richmond, VA; and son, Mark Smith and wife Peggy of Westminster, MD; and their children, Lindsay and Mark.
The family wants to thank Rev. Dr. Steve Fitzgerald and Dr. Ken Wilkins, Craven County Home Health & Hospice, Courtney and Donna, for all their care and service, Keith Merritt and Dan Roberts for all of their spiritual comfort.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 27, 2013 at McCarthy Court, 1321 McCarthy Blvd. with Rev. Dr. Steve Fitzgerald officiating. There will be a reception and celebration of life following the service.
