Richard Carlton Singleton, age 83, of New Bedford passed away on Saturday, October 7th after a brief illness, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was the devoted husband of 42 years to the late Linda (Galant) Singleton; the loving father of John Singleton and his wife, Ana of Lakeville; the cherished grandfather of Addison Singleton and his wife, Nancy of New Bedford; and the great-grandfather of Tristan Singleton of New Bedford. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Donald R. Cooper, several nieces and nephews and his loyal companion dog, Charlie. He was the brother of the late Patricia ‘Crabbie’ Ross.
Born in New Bedford on March 2, 1940, son of the late Sophie and Thomas Singleton, Richard graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School in 1956. He served two years in the U.S. Naval Reserve. In 1967, he joined the New Bedford Police Academy. He attended Babson College and received his Law Enforcement Management degree in 1974. He had a long career in law enforcement, being promoted to Sergeant in 1973 and remaining there until his retirement.
Upon retirement, he spent his time operating his business, Dick’s Antiques in New Bedford, buying, selling, and refurbishing antiques of all ages and eras. In 1987, his beloved grandson, Addison was born, whom he happily helped raise. He also enjoyed spending time with his great-grandson, Tristan.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 9:00AM in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Gabriel the Archangel, Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford, MA 02745.Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 to 7:00PM.
