Richard Henry Gurney, age 85 of East Freetown, passed away Tuesday November 13, 2012. He was the loving husband for 57 years to Alice Irene (Grenier) Gurney. He was the son of Henry L. Gurney and Gertrude F. (Matthews) Gurney.
Richard served in the South Pacific in the US Navy in WWII and returned to graduate from Holy Family High School. He resided in East Freetown all of his life and worked at Stillwater Assoc. as a machinist for 40 years. He was a member of the VFW Post #6643, an avid bowler and motorcycle enthusiast. He had a great love of animals and enjoyed many years raising livestock.
He was very involved for many years in Youth Sports in Freetown as a volunteer coach and umpire. He was an inspiration to those who loved him as a positive role model with an excellent demonstration of a loving, generous and humble husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend. He will be greatly missed but fondly remain in our hearts forever.
Survivors in addition to his wife are his children Lynne Meunier of New Bedford, Anne Cabucio and her husband James of E. Freetown, Michael Gurney and his wife Joanne of E. Freetown and Lisa Gurney Henshaw and her husband Daniel of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He was adored by his grandchildren whom he loved so much, Laura and Joshua Cabucio, Caroline Meunier, Renee and Nicole Gurney. He was the father of the late Richard H. “Ricky” Gurney and the brother of the late Henry R. Gurney and Joanne (Gurney) Grenier.
His funeral will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 9 am at ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, followed by a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10 am at St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Road, East Freetown, MA. Burial in Chace Cemetery. Visiting Hours will be Friday from 5-8pm.
