Rebecca M. (Broadbent) Pounds, 60, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Patrick J. Pounds, with whom she shared nearly 23 years of marriage.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, she was the daughter of Dennis and the late Cynthia (Daley) Broadbent.
Rebecca was a graduate of New Bedford High School and attended the Swain School of Design where she studied painting. She later received her Associates Degree from BCC in Nursing. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for many years and loved caring for others. She enjoyed knitting, reading, quilting, painting, cake decorating, sewing, and going to concerts.
Rebecca looked forward to her yearly trip to King Richard’s Faire, her favorite place in the world. A talented seamstress, she would spend all year sewing elaborate renaissance costumes for herself, her kids, and any of her friends who wanted to tag along. So expertly stitched were Rebecca’s costumes that anyone wearing one was often mistaken for a renaissance fair employee. She even sewed her own wedding dress.
Fiber arts were her passion. Not only could Rebecca knit, she could card the wool, spin it on a wheel or the drop-spindle her doting husband built for her, and dye the yarn with plants she gathered from the woods. Whether it was a scrap of fabric, a skein of yarn, or a blank canvas, anything Rebecca touched ended up more beautiful for having passed through her hands.
Rebecca loved her family more than anything, and she raised her children to appreciate nature and beauty and art. She taught her daughters Elizabeth and Madelyn the names of the constellations, trees, animals, birds, and flowers, so when they went out in the world they were always among friends. There was no better guide through life than her and no mother more loving. She will be missed.
Rebecca is survived by her father Dennis Broadbent of Westport, MA and her two loving daughters, Elizabeth Pounds of Cambridge, MA and Madelyn Pounds of New Bedford, MA. She was the sister of the late Holly Broadbent.
