Maurice Richard, 84, formerly of N. Dartmouth and New Bedford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, December 31, 2017 after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Constance (Pereira) Richard with whom he shared 55 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Albert and Angelina (Belisle) Richard he was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of the former St. Kilian Church.
Mr. Richard graduated from the Greater New Bedford Vocational High School and later went to serve in the United States Army in the 2nd Battalion of the 16th Infantry Regiment. Maurice worked as a draftsman at Raytheon’s Submarine Signal Division in Portsmouth, RI for 32 years. He was awarded the “Most Significant Design” award and holds a US Patent for a Printed Circuit Board Holder he invented while at Raytheon. He was a hockey coach and helped run the Learn to Skate program on Sunday mornings. He loved hockey, in particular the Montreal Canadiens, sailing and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa Gervais and her husband Mark of Rehoboth; a son, Robert Richard and his wife Kerry of McLean, VA; two grandchildren, Jackson and Julia Gervais of Rehoboth; a brother, Paul Richard and his wife Doris of New Bedford; and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. He was the brother of the late Ernest Richard, Normand Richard and Rita Sasseville.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 8AM from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at 9AM in St. Joseph-St. Therese Church, Acushnet Ave., New Bedford. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 7PM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford.
