Maureen Ann Malloy Fleury

Maureen A. Malloy Fleury, age 65, of New Bedford, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Maureen, along with her loving husband Joseph and her beloved fur-baby Luna, have lived in New Bedford since 1988.

Maureen was born in Milford, MA, the first child of James and Elizabeth (Ober) Malloy. The family moved to Brockton MA, and then settled in Avon, MA. Maureen attended St. Edward’s Parochial School, and graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in 1972. She received her Bachelor’s degree from UMASS Boston and her Master’s in Education from Bridgewater State University. She was a loyal employee of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, where she devoted 33 years as a Special Education Teacher until her retirement in 2016.

Maureen was passionate about her work and cared deeply for her students. She was one of very few women teaching in the corrections system. Maureen took great pride in helping her students achieve literacy, and obtain their GED’s and college degrees. Maureen loved the beach and the ocean. She and Joe travelled to the Caribbean every year to enjoy the sun and sand.

In addition to her husband Joseph, she is survived by her three step-children, Jason Fleury of Westport, Heather Fleury of NH, and Bethany Soares of Dartmouth; her brother Brian Malloy and his wife Marie Patricia Fournier of Plympton; her sister Christine Daley of Harwich; nephews Joshua Malloy, Sean Daley, and niece Melissa Daley. She was the sister in-law of the late Edward Daley.

Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 10:00AM at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, MA 02745. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation Tuesday, March 10th from 6:00 to 8:00PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Maureen’s honor to the Humane Society & Shelter- Southcoast, 31 Ventura Drive, Dartmouth, MA 02747. Burial is Private.
