Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Irene (Freitas) Fernandes she was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Parish.
Joyce graduated from New Bedford High School and went on to Kinyon-Campbell Business School. She worked as a secretary for Commercial Union and for Dr. Grenier in Dartmouth. She and her husband enjoyed the 15 winters they spent together in Largo, FL.
Mrs. Pontes loved the Red Sox and watching old movies. She enjoyed listening to music, traveling, and she was an excellent bowler.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Steven Pontes and his wife Cheryle of Acushnet.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 9 a.m. from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Julie Billiart Parish, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 4-7 p.m.
