Joseph A. “Mushy” Machado, 80, of New Bedford passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023 in The Oaks after a short illness. He was the husband of Barbara J. (Gadomski) Machado with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Fairhaven, a son of the late Manuel and Aldina (Laronda) Machado he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Machado served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and spent 22 years with the Army Reserve. He worked as a machine operator for PCI and upon retirement worked as a watchman for the Town of Fairhaven.
Mushy will be fondly remembered for his gentle nature and for being quite the character. He was a member of the Panther’s Club and a former member of the Thomas Livesey Club. He enjoyed going to the casino, watching movies, the Patriots, and the Red Sox. Mushy always made himself available to enjoy his grandchildren’s activities and was proud of the young adults they have become.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Joseph Machado and his wife Rachel of New Bedford; a daughter, Wendy Ferreira and her husband James of Acushnet; two grandchildren, Lucas Ferreira and Allison Ferreira; a brother, Manuel Machado and his wife Nancy of S. Dartmouth; a sister, Eileen Machado of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews.
His visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Boulevard, New Bedford. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
