

Joao C. Matias, a beloved resident of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on April 15, 1954, in Arrifes, Sao Miguel, Açores. Joao was known for his humorous nature and ability to make people laugh. He was a jokester who always had a joke to tell, bringing joy to those around him.
Joao spent his early years in Bermuda. It was there that he met and married his wife, Armanda (Couto) Matias. The couple celebrated 50 years of marriage together. In 1984, Joao and Armanda moved to the United States and settled in New Bedford, where they raised their family.
A career truck driver, Joao worked for various companies throughout his life and also enjoyed part-time work as a motor coach bus driver. He loved his job and took great pride in his work.
In his personal life, Joao was a huge fan of the Sporting soccer team and enjoyed playing cards with friends, taking trips to the casinos, traveling and most of all, spending time with his family.
Joao is survived by his loving wife, Armanda, and their two daughters, Fatima Raposo and her husband Ricardo, and Suzanne Stevens and her husband Scott. He also leaves behind his brother, Eduardo Matias and his wife Cecilia, as well as four cherished grandchildren: Hailee Bigelow, Macy Bigelow, Jake Stevens, and John Stevens. Joao was predeceased by his parents, Eduardo M. Matias and Maria E. (Cabral) Matias.

Visiting hours will be held at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford on Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral, Friday, April 25, 2025 at 9:00 am from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St, New Bedford at10:00 am. Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery, 1100 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford.
