Edna D. (Mello) Almeida, 84, of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 after a brave battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Donald A. Almeida with whom she shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Amelia (Pragana) Mello.
Edna was a graduate of New Bedford High School and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Bridgewater Teacher’s College. She was a dedicated teacher in the New Bedford Public School Department for 45 ½ years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, music, local day trips, and good conversation. Edna was a person who truly cared, and always saw the goodness and potential in everyone. She was a wonderful advocate and mentor for all of her students. Spending time with family and friends was very important, and she will be deeply missed.
In addition to her husband, Donald, she is survived by her loving daughter, Karen Polvere and her husband Joseph of Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews, and special cousins.
Edna’s family would like to send a very special “Thank You” to everyone who was involved in her care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Hospital. Their compassion and kindness are greatly appreciated.
