Born in Queens, NY, a son of the late Xavier and Margaret (Gretchen) Martin, he had resided in New Bedford most his life.
Mr. Martin was employed as a baker at My Bread Baking Company for a short time and then worked most of his career at Giusti’s Bunny Bread which later became the Nissan Baking Company. He was a foreman and union representative and retired in 1992.
Alfred and Drita had three children together as well as providing foster care to twelve newborn babies from birth up to one year old. All were loved as their own, and they wished they could have permanently adopted them all.
A horse lover, Alfred owned horses in his younger years. His hobbies included bowling, swimming, boating, fishing, and traveling. Also, he was a true Yankees baseball fan and watched them faithfully every year. He thought nothing of packing the car with the family and taking a day trip to NY city or their summer cottage in Connecticut. Another favorite was visiting the White Mountains every Labor Day weekend.
During retirement, he loved to visit the theme parks in Orlando, Florida. Another favorite past time was going to the casinos in Rhode Island and Connecticut to play the slot machines. He was a frugal player and seldom lost money.
He is survived by his children, Linda V. Martin of New Bedford and Steven D. Martin and his wife Suzie of Concord, NH; a brother, Louis Martin of CA; a sister, Marie Hardy of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Emma, Owen, Julie and Cory Martin; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas X. Martin and his grandson, Jacob Martin.
Burial Private.
Arrangements are in the care of Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA.
