Albert “Al” J. Poirier, age 88, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Oaks Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of 50 years of the late Therese Yvonne (Maillet) Poirier.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Armand and Matilda (Turcotte) Poirier. He worked at Morse Cutting Tools as a machine tool and die operator for 35 years until his retirement.
Mr. Poirier was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He was the recipient of the American Area Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Al loved to travel, listen to music, read, go to Foxwoods, and spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter: Jacqueline Abrantes and her husband Paul of East Freetown, three grandchildren: Derek Sylvia and his wife Lauren of Vermont, Keith Sylvia and his wife Kristin of Attleboro, MA, Corey Sylvia and his fiancée Marlene of New Bedford, MA, four great grandchildren: Brooke, Madison, Gavin and Grayson Sylvia, a brother: Romeo “Raymond” Poirier, and a son in law: Robert Sylvia of New Bedford and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers: Leo Poirier, Wilfred Poirier, and Normand Poirier and two sisters: Doris Morin and Yvonne Howard.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 4-7pm at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford. His Funeral will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass at 10am at St Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Road, Dartmouth. Burial to follow in the South Dartmouth Cemetery, 507 Elm Street, South Dartmouth, MA.
