John Anthony Bolander

John Anthony Bolander, 32 of San Francisco, California tragically departed this world Tuesday, July 4, 2023. He was born on March 1, 1991, to Albert Bolander Jr. and Rose A. Bolander (Bray). He is preceded in death by his grandfather Albert Bolander Sr.; grandparents, Anthony and Patricia Bray; and aunt Debbie Bolander.
His heartwarming smile, love of adventure, and fond memories live on through his grandmother, Mary E. Bolander of Louisville, KY; his father, Albert Bolander Jr. of Jeffersonville, IN; his brother, Albert Bolander lll of Jeffersonville, IN; sisters, Rose C. (Josh) Licata of Madison, NJ, Maria (Nathan) Stultz of Memphis, IN; his cherished nieces and nephew, Sabrina, Jamie, Victoria, Mary Jean, and Timothy Stultz; and his aunts Pattie, Margie, Karen, and Lynn; along with several cousins and relatives in the Louisville, KY area.
John grew up in Clark County IN and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in New Albany, IN (2005) and St Xavier High School in Louisville Ky (2009). He was a 2005 Discovery Channels Young Scientist Challenge finalist, a 2007 and 2009 International Science and Engineering Fair finalist, and a 2009 Semifinalist for the Intel Science Talent Search. John graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (2013) and a Master’s in Management Science and Engineering (2014). John was a data scientist and engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He worked for Electric Hydrogen Co. for the past two years and before that at Joby Aviation and Tesla Motors. He was an advisor to Coltura (Moving Beyond Gasoline) and Lead Electrical Engineer of the Stanford Solar Car Team from 2011 to 2013. As a fervent environmental advocate, John had focused his career on using modeling and data to optimize the performance of electric vehicles. In his spare time, John loved traveling and was an avid lover of the great outdoors including biking, swimming, kayaking, downhill skiing, triathlons, and hiking. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing.
Visitation for John will take place on Thursday, July 13, 2023, from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana 47150. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M Friday, July 14, 2023, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1752 Scheller Ln, New Albany, IN 47150.
A service for John will also be held on July 17, 2023, for his friends and colleagues in the San Francisco Bay area at The Old Union at Stanford, 520 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305. In the Center for Inter-Religious Community, Learning and Experiences (CIRCLE) 3rd Floor of the Old Union.
In remembrance of John’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Bolander Science endowment at St. Xavier HS in Louisville, KY, Coltura nonprofit organization, Seattle, WA, or to medical research working towards finding a cure for the many diseases that currently need more support
