Obituary of George Dewey Harris
GEORGE DEWEY HARRIS, 94 years of age, died Tuesday May 5th at Clark Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harris was born August 15, 1920 in Villa Ridge, Illinois to the late Samuel Dewey and Ida Belle Van Buren Harris. George was the third child of twelve children. He was an Army veteran of World War #2 and later retired after serving in the U.S. Mobility Equipment Command in St. Louis, Missouri. George met and married his wife, Alma Turner Hoskin, in June of 1970. He retired in August of 1985 and they traveled many places together and in January of 1989 they settled in Jeffersonville, IN. They became members of Gilt Edge Baptist Church where George served as an Usher and sang in the Men’s Choir until he was no longer able to do so. George Dewey Harris will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Alma, his family, and all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Hazel Young, Elmer Harris, Thelma J. Morgan and Mable L. Meeks. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Alma Turner Hoskin Harris; children, Robert Louis Harris, Julia Ann Adams (Sherman Sr.), Darcell McCaskil, David Pennington,Veda Daniels, and stepson, Jeffery L Hoskin; grandchildren, Robert Harris II, Cheron Harris, Sherman Adams Jr., Curtis John Adams(Angel), Christopher Daniels, Brian Harris, Cristina Daniels, Whitney McCaskill, Sharnell McCaskill, and Jeremy Hoskin Parran; several great grandchildren; and seven siblings, Lillian Davis, Ruth Hendrick, Mariejo Bradford, Bobbye Taylor (Robert), Joyce Hayes, Martha Ann Lambert (Rev. John), and Ronald Van Buren Harris. Also surviving are many cousins nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, May 15th, at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana and after 9:00 am Saturday, May 16th, at Gilt Edge Baptist Church, 1713 D.L. Motley Way (formerly 1713 Green St.) in Jeffersonville, IN. His Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Saturday at Gilt Edge Baptist Church with Pastor Victor Vinson presiding.
