ELMER M. DAVIS, 82 years of age, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Indiana. The son of the late Maurice and Laura (Brim) Davis, Elmer was born October 13, 1929 in New Albany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida (Wetherow) Davis; infant daughter, Mary Catherine Davis; granddaughter, Angela Ann Balmer; brothers, Dean, Gerald, Marvin and Kenny Davis; and sisters, Marcelene Cochran, Freda Rodewig and Emma Justice.
Elmer was retired from the Henry Bickel Construction Company and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of USAC and ARCA Racing Organizations, Mini Cup Motor Sports Racing Assn., and UMRC. He raced sprint cars, midgets, ¾ midgets and hydroplane boats. He participated in the movie “Winning” in 1968 with Paul Newman, Robert Wagner and Joanne Woodward and he was a member of the Spring Street Dairy Queen Breakfast Club.
Survivors include his children: Paul A. Davis (Louise) of New Albany, Rick Davis of New Albany, Patty Sue Lee (Jim) of Corydon IN, Sherry Pfund of New Albany IN and Dawn Michelle Robinson (Kenneth) of Louisville KY; special friend: Sug Murphy of New Albany; sisters: Mildred Bryant and Florence Ross; brother: Charles Davis; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am ~ 8:00 pm Sunday and after 9:00 am Monday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Service will be 1:00 pm Monday in the Kraft Spring Street Chapel with burial to follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Jeffersonville, Indiana.
