He was born on May 2, 1931 in Navilleton, Indiana, the son of Herman and Mary (Schmelz) Schmidt.
Carl’s first wife of 41 years Donna (Clark) Schmidt preceded him in death in October 1998. Also preceding him in death are brothers Herbert and Richard, sisters Nettie (Edward)Jones and Monica (Jerry) Haskell.
Carl graduated from New Albany High School in 1949 and worked part time for Kroger Company until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in January 1951 and served until November 1954. In December 1954 Carl started working for General Electric and going to night school at Indiana University Southeast and U of L. After graduating from U of L with an Accounting Degree in 1964 and completing a 3-year GE Business Training Course, Carl continued working for General Electric in Finance at Appliance Park for 53 years (38 full-time and 15 part-time on contract). Carl was also a member of the American Legion and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where he served on various committees.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Carolyn Susie (Shelton), children, Lezlie (Nick)Barth, Cindy (David) Orem, of New Albany and Laurabeth Schmidt of Louisville, two grandsons Bradley and Benjamin Orem, brother William (Anna) Schmidt of New Albany and sister Evelyn (Raymond)Banet of Floyds Knobs and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Kraft Funeral Home on Charlestown Road from 2 to 8 pm on Thursday. His Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, followed by entombment at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
