Audrey L. Smith, succumbed to pneumonia Monday, September 4th, 2017 in Crestview, FL, with her son, Brian Smith at her side. She was born Audrey Lee Ruth Cunningham (changed to Audrey Lynn Cunningham) in Monroe, MI on January 20, 1927. She and her parents later returned to their family home in Tazewell, TN where she was raised. Audrey was a straight A student, and after graduating from high school, took a job with The Oak Ridge TN Project. While it is unclear what she did there, she was told not to discuss her job with anyone. It was much later that she learned of Oak Ridge's role in The Manhattan Project. Several years later, while visiting a cousin in Lafayette, IN, she met her future husband, Roy N. Smith from Floyds Knobs. They married and raised four children in Southern Indiana. During the Vietnam War era she, again, worked for the government in a munitions plant in Indiana. Later on she went to work for a meat processing plant in Louisville, KY and retired from there. After retirement Audrey and Roy spent their remaining years in DeFuniak Springs, FL. Audrey was witty, intelligent and everyone loved her soft-spoken manner. She was a good and kind soul. She was also fearless, learning to pilot her own plane while in her 40's. She and Roy loved to go boating, deep sea fishing and travel on long road trips seeing the country until his death in 2002. She was loved and cherished by her three surviving children who will hold her in their hearts forever.
