It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. With his family by his side, Roy passed into the arms of Jesus, his Lord and Saviour, in the early morning of Thursday, January 12, 2023.
Left to cherish Roy’s memory are his wife of 51 years, Linda; his children Tanya, Sean (Julie), and Heather (Corey); his grandchildren Grace, Anwyn, Rose, and Thomas; and step-grandson Ty (Camille). Also left to remember him are his brother and sisters, Robert (Ilene), Susan (Phil), Brenda (Gordon), Linda (Gary), Dee Dee (Cal), and many nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his parents, Eileen and Harry Dixon, brother Peter, and sister Rosemary Piché.
Roy was born in Calgary and grew up in the small town of Tilley, Alberta. After obtaining a Forest Technology diploma from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, he moved to Winnipeg in 1970 to begin his career. He worked for 36 years for the Manitoba government in the fields of forestry and remote sensing. While working, he enrolled in evening classes at the University of Winnipeg and completed a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography. Roy was passionate about his work in remote sensing and appreciated the many friends that he made throughout his career.
Roy’s life was defined by his Christian faith and his deep love for and dedication to his family. He was devoted to his wife, Linda, and a kind, encouraging father who was always ready to listen. He also had a great sense of humour and told many stories of his time growing up in Tilley and his early jobs as a farmhand, railway worker, and timber cruiser. Roy (“Papa”) loved his grandkids very much and enjoyed spending time with them. He never missed their concerts, sports games, or dance recitals.
Roy was diagnosed with a serious heart condition when he was in his twenties but, with the help of his cardiologists, and his steadfast determination to be there for the family that he loved, he beat the odds. Dad, we have confidence that you have a strong, healthy heart in Heaven. When we’re reunited someday, we will delight in being wrapped in one of your awesome hugs.
At Roy’s request, the family will hold a small, private gathering in his honour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart & Stroke Foundation.
