Gunter has been a close and loyal friend for over 60 years. He and Ilse have been part of our family  since we met so long ago and both our families' lives intertwined.   He has been all that is mentioned in his memorial  and more as for us he meant not only offered assistance  when needed but also his so positive outlook on life and characteristic optimism that always pointed  us towards  the existence of a silver lining at our personal horizon. 
He will never be forgotten as he was part of our lives, enjoying  pastimes together and both families watch his and Ilse's as well as our  children being born and together delight in them. 

As I am married to George’s youngest daughter, Sandi, I have known George for close to 35 years. There are a lot of great memories throughout that time but I became much closer to George over the last couple of years on my trips to Winnipeg to help Ilse and George. We would share a German pastry from the Crusty Bun Bakery each morning and talk about him moving to Canada, his soccer career, his business career and the wonderful men that his daughters married (there may be some writer’s embellishment on that last subject). We would then venture out into the Riverview neighbourhood for some fresh air before lunch. In the evening I would return and we would venture out once again but on a different route. He would talk to everyone we saw and always had a positive comment for them. He would tell them how nice their house looked or talk to them about what was planted in their front garden and flowerpots. Although one time when we came across a man cutting his lawn in his open toed sandals, George did have to make a comment that it wasn’t safe to cut your lawn in open toed shoes, but only after telling him how nice his lawn looked first. 
I also fondly remember the few trips we made to the Oakwood Café while he was at Riverview. He would have borscht soup, sunny side up eggs, lemon meringue pie and a dark beer. An unusual combination to say the least but he had a smile from ear to ear. One final memory comes from this past February. A doctor caring for George had just returned from maternity leave and as soon as he saw her he asked whether she had a boy or a girl. She said she had a girl and George immediately said ‘So now you have two girls!’. The doctor seemed a little surprised that he remembered that she already had a little girl. But that was George. He liked to get to know people and had an amazing memory.
I will miss you George. Rest in peace.

Dear Ilse, Sandi and Susan

We are so sad and so sorry for your loss. 
I remember Guenter (Georg) as my kind and beloved uncle. As a child he and you were the far away family in Canada who visited us in Germany from time to time. 
But when I decided to improve my English speaking skills I have been warmly welcomed in Winning and got to know my Canadian family better. 
I stayed about three month with you, Ilse, and Georg and I am so thankful for that time.
I remember Georg taking me to my English class the first morning, we took the bus and I was kind of overwhelmed by the city. But he made me feel comfortable and easy. 
Every day a  peace of cake waited for me when I got home in the afternoon. And sometimes in the evening  we tasted the self made wine he did in his downstairs.
I came to Canada with a package of private problems  and Ilse and George so kindly helped me to find inner strength and happiness again.
One of my favorite sayings, he told me is: 
,love many, trust few and paddle your own canoe.’
I try to do that, Georg. Thank you for everything.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You all played such an important part of my young life!  In my memory, I can see both  George and Ilse in your living room welcoming me with open arms. I remember the fresh  flowers,  strawberries and kaisers, incredible cake and always, always the amazing conversations!  Here’s to a life well lived!  I hope to see you all again sometime soon.
